Enrollment Information
How to become a little brother or sister?
Contact Big Brothers Big Sisters and our agency staff will assist you in making arrangements to meet for an informal in person interview. We then assess all of the information gathered during the interview and determine if the child is eligible to participate in our program. When your child is accepted in to our program we place them on our “ready to be matched” list.
The parent of the child is contacted if we have a volunteer to match their child with. At this time our staff will allow the parent to approve the volunteer. The final step is to make the match. The match is made at the child’s home or at the Big Brothers Big Sister’s office, a match contract is signed, and the initial meeting will be the first activity for the new match.
Once matched, the volunteer, parent/guardian, and the child will be contacted monthly by a Match Support Specialist during the first year of the match. At the 6-month and 1-year marks, matches are required to meet with a Match Support Specialist. Our staff, the volunteer, and child set goals for the match to work on until their next evaluation. The Match Support Specialists act as both a friend and a counselor to the match and can be contacted at anytime for resources, feedback, and any other concerns or issues that may arise during the life of the match.
How long does it take to get matched?
It is difficult to determine the length of time it takes for a child to be matched. The reason for this is that matches are not made on a first come first serve basis, but are based on several very important factors, such as common interests, place of residence and parent preferences.
While children are waiting to be matched, the agency sponsors various activities that both unmatched and matched children are highly encouraged to attend.
